On a historical kick...

12/16/2014

Lately I've been on a kick of reading historical romances - for the most part, I've never really read them before, or at least not too many, because it frustrates me to read about women who can't show their ankles without scandal. I mostly come away with a gratitude that I didn't live back then. I would not have made a good, demure miss. Good thing I live in these times where snark is welcomed and ankles are acceptable.

But despite all that, I've been devouring them over the last few weeks - at least the ones with a sense of humor. Without the chuckles, I can't take the rest of it. I'm not sure why they appeal right now... maybe because I'm overwhelmed with my life and as an escape, historical fiction can't get much further from my reality?  Who knows?

Anyone got any good recommendations? I'm working my way through the ones suggested by Facebook :)

Feeling festive yet?

My husband is the kind of guy that starts playing Christmas music the second Thanksgiving is over (and probably would do so sooner if his wife weren't such a grinch). My main issue with it is that my brain is stuck on record and there's only so many times I can have "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas" drift through my cranium before I want to murder people.

So I tend to limit my exposure a bit.

And, as I realized the other night, it's probably because I'm a December baby and I'm used to not starting to celebrate Christmas until after my birthday, so I'm used to a much shorter holiday season.

At any rate, are you singing Christmas carols yet?

Thanksgiving

I got sick for Thanksgiving and it kind of sucked. I was going to host, but we had to transfer it last minute to my parents' house... good thing they're flexible.

Anyone have any more fun that me?

I'm evil. No, really. Evil. I even belong to the Evil League of Evil Writers. We're evil, dontcha know?

Over there, we do evil things like make people cry (by fundraising for them), mock people, and snark at things. We're professionally evil.

I think it's a great group. We support each other and have a good thing going. Check it out sometime, if you have  a moment: http://www.evilwriters.com

With a wiggle of my nose...

Speaking of superpowers, my family has long been aware that my brother and I do share a superpower. We both have the ability to break technology, just by being near it.

No, really. Computers get weird glitches when we use them, we can crash just about anything with circuits, and no one can figure out why. My brother once even caused a computer to burst into flames. Mostly, I just cause my phone to freeze up, the computer to crash, and the TV to do bizarre things. I once even managed to break the oven. The real problem is that I drive an all electronic car and am regularly getting stranded places because of some weird glitch. The service people, whom I speak to regularly, are often baffled. "We've never seen that error message before," they says, scratching their heads, unable to replicate my awesome powers.

Fortunately for me, my husband seems to be able to fix things just by laying his hands on them. So if my phone stops working, I hand it to him and it works just fine again. That's a huge plus in our marriage.

So, if you ever need a reason to replace something electronic, invite me over and have me stand near it for a while. I've got you covered.

Not much of a superpower, I grant you, but you'll be glad to have me and my brother around when the rise of the machines happens.

Superpowers?

If you could have any kind of super power, what would it be? I think about this a lot, since I'm writing a series about superheroes.

For me, it's always going to be teleportation. Failing that, flying super fast. But that's because I love to travel, but hate the transportation part.

What about you guys? What would you pick?

New YA/NA Novella available

Super excited to announce that my YA/NA Novella, Girl on Fire, is now available! I wrote this while I was recovering from having my appendix out (whee!) and entered it in a contest with Boroughs Publishing Group. It's now available to read - see the YA page for more information!

What super power would you want if you could have any? I'd always pick teleportation, but that's probably because I love to travel.
